Obedience Trials are a competition in which the dog's ability to perform a set of exercises is judged and scored based on a perfect score of 200. A score of 170 or more is considered a qualifying score and counts toward one “leg” of three needed to complete an AKC obedience title. (http://www.akc.org/events/obedience/index.cfm)

Because the Dalmatian is a highly intelligent breed, he often excels in obedience trials. But, because the Dalmatian is a highly intelligent breed, he can become easily bored by repetition of obedience exercises he has already learned. It is therefore essential that the Dalmatian’s handler keep him focused and interested with a variety of new tasks and games interspersed with obedience exercises already learned.

Dalmatians love attention and praise, so they are quick to learn the behaviors their handlers teach when positive reinforcement—such as enthusiastic verbal praise or a tasty treat is their reward for a job well done. It is truly heartwarming to see and experience the emotional bond and teamwork between Dalmatian and handler. We encourage all our Dalmatian friends to give their dogs a try in the obedience ring.
